Watching people move on with their lives can be difficult- but it’s inevitable. As growth happens, people naturally make shifts in their lives and sometimes, shifts can either be with you or without you. When you are on the other side of growth, growth in others can often feel like rejection, disappointment, not feeling needed or wanting and a slew of other feelings that may show up. Although, at times, we can’t help our initial feeling about others’ life changes, we can choose to reflect and process those feelings.
Processing our own feelings about others’ growth can be asking ourselves, why are feeling this way, what are the next steps in this relationship, how can i respond to these changes and how can i assertively handle someone growing without me. It is important to first understand our own feelings and process them so that we can respond respectfully. Just like a singular person, relationships also changes and evolves, and of course growth will influence a relationship. (There’s no limit on the amount of time we need to process and sort out our feelings).
After processing your own feelings, it is important to now address your thoughts and feelings with your loved one. This communication can be challenging, but addressing your thoughts shows that you really value the relationship. Additionally, it prevents you from harboring feelings and unconsciously treating a loved one in a negative matter.
No matter the circumstances, I believe it is important to honor your feelings. Be honest with yourself by allowing yourself to process your thoughts and feelings because it can be a matter of losing or keeping an important relationship.
With care,
Gwena’e
